The Kolkata Police has announced a complete closure of Vidyasagar Setu (2nd Hooghly Bridge) for 16 hours on Sunday, August 24. The temporary shutdown, from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, is aimed at public safety and infrastructure maintenance. The decision was announced through an official notification issued by Manoj Kumar Verma, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, under multiple provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Calcutta Police Acts, aimed at ensuring traffic safety and regulation.
The maintenance is being undertaken by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC). As per the official notification, the decision involves the lifting and placement of steel portal beams near the Santragachi Bus Terminus on Kona Expressway.
It is necessary to facilitate critical repair and rehabilitation work of Vidyasagar Setu, including the replacement of stay cables, holding-down cables, and bearings.
Traffic Diversions Announced
To manage the impact of the closure, the Kolkata Police has outlined an alternative vehicular circulation pattern along Vidyasagar Setu and its ramps for the affected hours:
Westbound Diversions:
All types of vehicles coming from AJC Bose Road via Zeerut Island, intending to use Vidyasagar Setu, will be diverted at Turf View via the at-grade road towards Hastings Crossing. They can then avail the St George’s Gate Road – Strand Road – Howrah Bridge, or can take a right turn from Hastings for KP Road.
Vehicles, on the other hand, coming from KP Road via J&N Island will be diverted from 11 Furlong Gate towards Hastings Crossing to proceed via St George’s Gate Road–Strand Road–Howrah Bridge.
Eastbound Diversions:
As for the eastbound vehicles, those coming along CGR Road via Khidderpore will be redirected at Hastings Crossing to take a left turn onto St Georges Gate Road – Strand Road – Howrah Bridge.
Vehicles using the Y-Point ramp near Ghora Pass on K.P. Road will be diverted at Y-Point towards 11 Furlong Gate to access K.P. Road – Red Road for Howrah Bridge.
In addition to that, vehicular movement may be diverted through arterial roads as and when required, based on traffic conditions.
Advice for Commuters
Authorities have urged commuters to plan their travel accordingly on August 24. Those travelling to and from Howrah can expect delays and diversions in and around the Vidyasagar Setu zone. So, travellers must leave early, use alternative routes, or rely on public transport options to minimise inconvenience.
