Gardening expert says you only need 5 plants for lovely yard

A gardening guru has shared the five plants you need to buy this year to completely transform your yard. Not only will they improve the look of your garden, you’ll also save money as they flower all summer long.

The gardener, who is known as the Mediterranean Gardener on TikTok, listed the five ‘best’ plants to pick up when you next visit a garden centre in a recent video. So here’s what to look for.

1. Geraniums

Geraniums are a popular group of flowering plants in the family Geraniaceae, widely known for their vibrant blooms, attractive foliage, and versatility.

He said: “Hardy geraniums, not the annual version. They have pollinator friendly blooms though summer and into autumn, and many will grow in full sun and partial shade.”

2. Erigeron

The gardening guru added: “If you’re looking for low growing plants, try an Erigeron or Campanula. They both spread beautifully and they’re pollinator friendly.”

Erigeron, commonly known as fleabane, is a genus of flowering plants that belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae). These plants are native to various regions, including North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

They typically have small daisy-like flowers with a yellow, central disk floret surrounded by white, pink, purple, or blue ray petals.

3. Sweet peas

Next, he says sweet peas are popular annuals because they begin to flower as early as May and provide your garden with colour all summer long.

The flowering plant is native to the Mediterranean region. These beautiful, fragrant flowers are highly popular in gardens and for cut flower arrangements due to their lovely colours and delightful, sweet scent.

4. Penstemon

He added: “If you’re looking for immediate colour, Penstemon are the answer. Plant groups of three to five for immediate impact.”

These plants are drought-tolerant and prefer well-draining soils. They thrive in full sun but can tolerate some partial shade depending on the species.

5. Verbena

The expert added: “Perfect to add height to your border is for Verbena Bonariensis. It’s a superb butterfly plant that even rivals Buddleia.”

Verbena Bonariensis are often used in gardens as a decorative plant because of its tall, graceful stems and eye-catching flowers. These lavender flowers also work well in wildflower gardens, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and alongside ornamental grasses.

People were very appreciative of the advice. Commenting on his post, one user said: “I bought two packets of Sweet William and now I have them growing everywhere. They start blooming end of May through summer.”

Another user added: “I absolutely love Erysimum Bowles Mauve. Blooms from March until November. Campanula is gorgeous!”

A third user said: “Me and my son sprinkled a £2 box of wild flowers in April, they’ve been lovely to look at and lasted so long. They’ve brought some bees which was really the reason I got them.”

And one more user added: “Sweet peas are fab but oh god the greenfly.”
