Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on August 22, where he will inaugurate 13.61 km of new metro routes in Kolkata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set for a big two-state visit on August 22, with key inaugurations lined up in West Bengal and Bihar.
From metro rail projects in Kolkata to mega infrastructure works in Gaya, his trip promises a major boost to connectivity, travel and development in the region.
What’s Happening in West Bengal?
In Kolkata, PM Modi will inaugurate a 13.61 km metro network, flagging off the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar service at Jessore Road Metro Station. He will also take a ride on the route to the airport, as per ANI.
Through video conferencing, he will launch the Sealdah–Esplanade and Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro services.
- The airport line will ease travel for flyers.
- The Sealdah–Esplanade stretch will cut travel time from 40 minutes to just 11 minutes.
- The Beleghata line will link the IT hub, giving a push to the city’s workforce.
He will also open a newly built subway at Howrah Metro Station and lay the foundation stone for the 6-lane Kona Expressway (Rs 1,200 crore), expected to improve connectivity between Howrah, Kolkata and surrounding towns.
Key Benefits of the Metro Projects:
- Improved Airport Access: The Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar line will significantly ease travel to Kolkata Airport.
- Reduction In Travel Time: Sealdah–Esplanade line will cut down commute time from ~40 minutes to just 11 minutes.
- Enhanced Connectivity To IT Hub: The Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section will boost access to the IT sector.
- Better Connectivity Across Kolkata: These routes will link key and busy areas of the city, improving overall transit efficiency.
- Strengthened Multimodal Transport: The new metro lines will integrate with other modes of transport, easing movement for lakhs of daily commuters.
What’s Planned for Bihar?
In Gaya, PM Modi will roll out projects worth around Rs 13,000 crore. Key highlights include:
- Aunta–Simaria Bridge on Ganga (Rs 1,870 crore): A six-lane structure that will cut over 100 km of detour for heavy vehicles and ease traffic jams.
- NH-31 upgrades: A four-lane Bakhtiyarpur–Mokama section (Rs 1,900 crore) to smoothen freight and passenger travel.
- Buxar Thermal Power Plant (Rs 6,880 crore): Adding 660 MW capacity to meet Bihar’s energy needs.
- Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Muzaffarpur: Advanced treatment facilities to reduce patient dependence on metros.
- Namami Gange projects: New sewage treatment plants to clean the Ganga and improve sanitation.
Adding to this, PM Modi will also:
- Flag off the Amrit Bharat Express (Gaya–Delhi) and Buddhist Circuit Train (Vaishali–Koderma).
- Hand over keys to beneficiaries of PMAY housing schemes.
These projects are expected to boost connectivity, improve healthcare, support industries, and bring better living standards for lakhs of people in Bihar.
