Tamil Nadu has launched a major upgrade to its public transport system by rolling out over 3,100 mini bus routes across the state.
This move is part of the government’s revised Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme, which aims to improve connectivity in rural and underserved areas.
41 New Mini Buses Begin Service in Madurai and Theni
According to TOI, in a special event held at the Armed Reserve Ground in Madurai, State Ministers P Moorthy (Commercial Taxes and Registration) and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (Information Technology and Digital Services) flagged off 32 new mini bus routes.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin launched nine mini buses on three new routes in Theni district, at the Colonel John Pennycuick Bus Terminus in Theni-Allinagaram.
What’s New in the Scheme?
The revised scheme, rolled out earlier this year by Chief Minister M K Stalin, includes the following updates:
- Route extensions up to 25 km allowed
- 65 percent of new routes must cover areas with no existing bus services
- Mini buses can now operate from main bus stands
- Existing operators can switch to the new scheme
- Total of 3,103 routes identified: 2,094 new and 1,009 revised
This expansion connects a whopping 25,708 km of rural roads, significantly improving daily commutes and accessibility for thousands across Tamil Nadu.
