Twiglets fans say snack ‘doesn’t taste the same’

Twiglets are an iconic British snack often enjoyed at parties or in front of the television.

The wheat-based nibbles are known for their “distinctive knobbly shape” and twig-like appearance, thanks to their mottled brown colour.

Their unique flavour comes from yeast extract, also used in Marmite, giving them a strong, tangy taste. It has prompted users to wonder what they are actually made from.

The snack even prompted a debate on Reddit last year when fans started to wonder if the recipe had changed in recent years.

One user asking: “Have Twiglets changed their formula?”

The snack has a rich history, having been created in 1929 by French biscuit maker J.Rondalin while he was working as a technical manager at Peek Freans’ Bermondsey factory. They decided to add brewer’s yeast to leftover Vitawheat dough

Last year, The Grocer revealed that Twiglets had seen a recipe revamp, now boasting 60% less salt. It was also highlighted that Twiglets would be transitioning to being oven-baked rather than fried.

The Redditor’s question prompted a variety of responses.

One individual remarked: “I said that they were different too. Sort of a tang and different strange aftertaste. I’m going to have some more to check.”

Another shared their thoughts: “You know, others have asked this. So they might have done something.”

A third person disclosed: “They must have changed the recipe, I am allergic to celery, and twiglets always used to contain celery, they don’t anymore.”

After being divised by Rondalin, it was three years before Twiglets properly hit the shelves under the Peek Freans brand.

Now, they’re produced in Aintree by United Biscuits subsidiary, Jacob’s. Particularly popular during Christmas, Twiglets are a crunchy treat enjoyed all year round, with flavours like curry and Worcester Sauce occasionally appearing on our shelves.
